El Dia de Los Muertos!!!
The Hispanic Community gathered the children together on Saturday, October 27, 2001, to celebrate
El Dia de Los Muertos, the "Day of the Dead." Combining the celebration of All Souls Day (November 2nd) with local customs, the people annually remember their beloved dead with special prayers and celebrations, both at a special home altar and in the cemeteries. The children's' El Dia de Los Muertos was earlier than normal so that they would be able to learn about their heritage and so be able to celebrate El Dia de Los Muertos with their families on November 2nd.|
The special altar for El Dia de Los Muertos was erected in the school yard. It is adorned with symbolic gifts, food, and decorations to remind people of their beloved dead. Prayers and songs are used to remind people of what Jesus did for us on the Cross. |
This is a small group of the teachers, students, and families who participated in this year's celebration of El Dia de Los Muertos! |

Not only is the food brought to the altar for El Dia de Los Muertos eaten or taken home, this altar had to be dismantled. |
Sister Sulyeka is holding a basket of special Pan de Los Meurtos, Bread of the Dead. It is covered with sugar, but the bread itself is not sweet. This kind of bread is often baked in a large loaf, but for our celebration they were small. The Pan de Los Meurtos is only baked for this holiday. |
